Lost your Fire TV Stick remote?

Lost the Fire TV Stick remote? Your phone replaces it over Wi-Fi — D-pad, volume, inputs, typing — with no hardware to buy. First, a Fire TV Stick has no buttons at all, so the fallback when the remote dies is your phone on the same Wi-Fi or HDMI-CEC from the television’s own remote.

Don't stress. Your phone is already a full Alexa-capable Fire TV remote. Setup takes 30 seconds.

The Fire TV line is mid-transition

Which Fire TV Stick you have — and how it takes commands

Amazon’s streaming line is not one platform any more. The Fire TV Stick 4K Select, launched in October 2025, is the first stick to run Vega OS — Amazon’s new system, not Fire OS — while the rest of the range stays on Fire OS. They look identical on the shelf and on your TV.

Fire TV Stick model lines, the operating system each one runs, how it is reached over the network, whether pairing is required, and where the on-set button is.
Model line / series TV operating system How it is controlled over the network Pairing On-set button
Fire TV Stick HD (2026) Fire OS Local HTTP, found by mDNS (_amzn-wplay._tcp) 4-digit PIN on screen None — it is a stick
Fire TV Stick 4K Select (Oct 2025) Vega OS — Amazon’s new system, not Fire OS Local network control over Wi-Fi 4-digit PIN on screen None — it is a stick
Fire TV Stick 4K Plus Fire OS Local HTTP, found by mDNS (_amzn-wplay._tcp) 4-digit PIN on screen None — it is a stick
Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd gen, 2023) Fire OS Local HTTP over Wi-Fi 6E, found by mDNS 4-digit PIN on screen None — it is a stick
Fire TV Cube (3rd gen, 2022) Fire OS Local HTTP over Wi-Fi 6E or wired Ethernet 4-digit PIN on screen Buttons on the housing

None of these has a button on it. A stick is a dongle, so every "press the button on the device" instruction written for a TV simply does not apply.

Reaching the menu with no remote

There is no button to press

A Fire TV Stick is a dongle behind the TV with no controls on it at all. The fallback is HDMI-CEC: switch on HDMI CEC Device Control under Settings → Display & Sounds on the Fire TV itself, and your television’s own remote can drive the Stick’s power, volume and navigation. It needs a CEC-capable TV and port, and some implementations are unreliable.

Reaching the Stick’s own network settings needs a working controller — its remote, the phone app, or a CEC-capable TV remote. There is no physical route in, which is why the CEC switch is worth turning on before you ever need it.

Known Fire TV Stick failure mode

The phone app never finds the Fire TV

Almost always the network, and usually one of two settings. A guest SSID and router AP or client isolation both exist to stop devices on the network talking to each other — which is exactly what discovery needs to do. The phone shows full Wi-Fi and still sees nothing.

What helps: Move the phone off the guest network onto the same SSID as the Stick, and turn off AP or client isolation on the router. If the physical remote is the problem instead, Amazon’s documented re-pairing move is holding Home for about ten seconds until the pairing screen appears.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Specific answers for Fire TV Stick users — including which Fire TV Stick lines run which system.

Is there a free replacement remote app for Fire TV Stick on iPhone?

Yes — our free wireless remote replacement iOS app works with all Amazon Fire TV Stick smart TVs. It connects to your TV over Wi-Fi using HTTP, and Amazon Fire TV Stick units are found automatically via mDNS (_amzn-wplay._tcp) — no manual IP address entry. The app prompts you to complete 4-digit PIN. Full D-pad navigation, volume, mute, HDMI input switching, and media playback controls are available at zero cost — no subscription, no credit card, no trial period.

What's the fastest lost remote control guide for Fire TV Stick?

The fastest solution is a Wi-Fi remote app on your iPhone. Fire TV Stick smart TVs running Amazon Fire TV support LAN control via HTTP. Open our app — your Amazon Fire TV Stick appears in the device list automatically through mDNS (_amzn-wplay._tcp) discovery. Requires 4-digit PIN. You have full remote control in under 15 seconds without any hardware purchase or replacement remote.

How do I connect my iPhone to my Fire TV Stick via Wi-Fi to use as a remote?

Make sure your iPhone and Amazon Fire TV Stick are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Our app uses mDNS (_amzn-wplay._tcp) to discover your TV automatically — no Bluetooth, no IR blaster, no IP address entry required. The app prompts you to complete 4-digit PIN. After the first-time connection your iPhone is a permanent wireless remote replacement for the lost Fire TV Stick remote, with all navigation, volume, and streaming app controls working over Wi-Fi.

Does Fire TV Stick have its own remote app for this TV?

The Amazon Fire TV app. Amazon publishes a Fire TV app, listed by AMZN Mobile LLC and requiring iOS 15.1 or later. It wants you signed in to the same Amazon account the device was set up with, which is the step people trip over when the device belongs to someone else in the household.

Where is the button on the Fire TV Stick itself, and can it reach the settings menu?

Why would a remote app fail to find my Fire TV Stick?

Almost always the network, and usually one of two settings. A guest SSID and router AP or client isolation both exist to stop devices on the network talking to each other — which is exactly what discovery needs to do. The phone shows full Wi-Fi and still sees nothing. Move the phone off the guest network onto the same SSID as the Stick, and turn off AP or client isolation on the router. If the physical remote is the problem instead, Amazon’s documented re-pairing move is holding Home for about ten seconds until the pairing screen appears.
