Lost the Sony remote? Your phone replaces it over Wi-Fi — D-pad, volume, inputs, typing — with no hardware to buy. First, Sony’s 2024 rename to BRAVIA 3, 5, 7, 8 and 9 hides a real split — the new numbers ship with Google TV, while older X-series sets started on Android TV.

Sony’s split runs along model age
Sony renamed its range in 2024 — the X77, X85 and X90 numbering gave way to BRAVIA 3, 5, 7, 8 and 9 — and the rename hides a real technical split. The new BRAVIA numbers ship with Google TV. A large installed base of older X-series sets ran Android TV 13 until a 2025 update moved them to Android TV 14 with the Google TV interface.
| Model line / series | TV operating system | How it is controlled over the network | Pairing | On-set button |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BRAVIA 3 (Standard LED) | Google TV | Android TV remote protocol over TLS, ports 6466/6467 | 6-digit PIN on screen | Location varies by model — Sony does not standardise it |
| BRAVIA 5 / BRAVIA 7 (Mini-LED) | Google TV | Android TV remote protocol over TLS, ports 6466/6467 | 6-digit PIN on screen | Location varies by model |
| BRAVIA 8 / BRAVIA 9 (OLED and Mini-LED flagship) | Google TV | Android TV remote protocol over TLS, ports 6466/6467 | 6-digit PIN on screen | Location varies by model |
| Legacy X-series (X77L, X75K, X70L and similar) | Android TV 13, updated to Android TV 14 with the Google TV UI in 2025 | Android TV remote protocol over TLS, ports 6466/6467 | 6-digit PIN on screen | Underside near the logo on some series, rear panel on others |
Sony’s first-run setup offers Set Up Google TV or Set Up Basic TV. A set configured as Basic TV has its smart features switched off — it is still capable hardware, just not currently a networked one.
Reaching the menu with no remote
Unlike Samsung and LG, Sony gives no single answer for where the physical control is — its own support notes that placement varies and points owners at the manual for their model. Reported positions include the underside near the logo, the rear panel and the side edge, depending on series and year.
Once the TV is on a network the Google TV app is the practical route into settings. A USB or Bluetooth mouse is the documented alternative on Google TV, and it works when no remote exists at all.
Known Sony failure mode
The Google TV pairing PIN fails silently more often than it errors. The causes are a phone and TV on different networks — a guest SSID, mesh isolation, or an active VPN on the phone — or firmware that is behind. One thing not to confuse it with: Sony has a completely separate PIN system for Parental Lock, and the two are unrelated.
What helps: Turn off any VPN, put the phone on the same SSID as the TV rather than a guest network, and update the TV’s firmware before retrying the pairing screen.

FAQ
Specific answers for Sony TV users — including which Sony lines run which system.
Yes. Sony Bravia TVs with Google TV (2021–2024 XR-A95L, XR-X95L, XR-X90L, XR-X85L, and X, K-Series) and Android TV (2019–2020 X-Series) expose remote control via Bravia IP Control over your home LAN. Enable it at Settings → Device Preferences → IP Control, set Authentication to Normal, and ensure Pre-Shared Key is noted. The app discovers your Bravia TV automatically and establishes a connection without Bluetooth or an IR blaster.
Sony Bravia TVs have a physical button (or joystick) on the chassis. On XR OLED and MASTER Series models the button is on the rear center spine; on X-Series and K-Series (2022+), it is on the rear lower-right panel. Press once to power on. After Google TV loads (about 30 seconds), open the app on your iPhone — it will discover the Bravia on your network and connect immediately.
Yes. The Bravia IP Control protocol is supported across Google TV (2021+) and Android TV (2019–2020) Sony models. This includes the A95L QD-OLED, A80L OLED, X95L mini-LED, X90L, X85L, and the full K-Series (KD-43X75K through KD-85X95K). Ensure IP Control is enabled and your TV is on the same Wi-Fi network as your iPhone. The app delivers Google TV navigation, Home screen access, streaming app launcher, and HDMI ARC control.
BRAVIA Connect, or the Google TV app. Sony runs two official routes at once. BRAVIA Connect is the newer, model-specific app covering BRAVIA 9, 8, 8 II, 7, 5, 3, 2 II and the A95L. The Google TV app is the platform-wide alternative and is not Sony-specific at all.
