How to connect a Sony TV to Wi-Fi without the remote

Getting a Sony TV onto Wi-Fi without a remote is chicken-and-egg: the app needs the network the TV is not on. Ethernet breaks the loop. Also, Sony’s 2024 rename to BRAVIA 3, 5, 7, 8 and 9 hides a real split — the new numbers ship with Google TV, while older X-series sets started on Android TV.

Three routes work on a Bravia with no remote. Run an Ethernet cable from the router to the LAN socket on the back: the TV is online at once, and a phone on the same router pairs with it using a 6-digit code on the TV screen, then steers it to Settings → Network & Internet → Wi-Fi. Sony renamed its range in 2024 — the X77, X85 and X90 numbering gave way to BRAVIA 3, 5, 7, 8 and 9 — and the rename hides a real technical split. The new BRAVIA numbers ship with Google TV. From there My Universal TV Remote Control finds the Bravia by mDNS (_androidtvremote2._tcp), pairs once with the 6-digit code over TLS on ports 6466/6467, and gives you a D-pad and a keyboard for the Network & Internet menu. Step 1

Check what the Bravia already remembers

If the TV was online before and you only replaced the router or changed the password, go to step 4: a hotspot that copies the old network name and password brings it back with no cable. A TV that has never been online, or was factory reset, remembers nothing, so it needs step 2 or step 3.
Step 2

Wire it: Ethernet into the LAN socket

Run a cable from any free router port to the LAN socket on the back of the Bravia. A wired link needs no password and no menu, so the set is on the network within seconds. If first-run setup was left at Basic TV, the smart features are off — the set has to finish Google TV setup before a phone can pair with it.
Step 3

Or plug in a USB mouse

A plain wired USB mouse works on Google TV: a pointer appears and a left click selects. Open Settings from the gear icon, choose Network & Internet, switch Wi-Fi on, pick your network and type the password on the on-screen keyboard. If that works you are done and need nothing else.
Step 4

Pair your phone over the shared network

Put your phone on the same router — or the same hotspot — as the TV and open My Universal TV Remote Control. The Bravia appears in the device list by itself. Choose it and type the 6-digit code shown on the TV screen. Pairing is asked once per phone.
Step 5

Join the real Wi-Fi, then remove the bridge

With the on-phone D-pad open Settings → Network & Internet → Wi-Fi, select your home network and enter the password from the phone keyboard. When the TV reports Connected, unplug the Ethernet cable or stop the hotspot. The TV now has a new address, so pick it again in the app's device list.

That is the usual Sony pattern, not the exception. Of the failed connection attempts to Sony sets that the app recorded over the last 90 days, a little over half were sessions that dropped or timed out after they had been working, against about one in five that stopped at the pairing code. After Wi-Fi setup the cause is nearly always the address: the TV left Ethernet or the hotspot and joined Wi-Fi under a new one. Select the TV again in the device list, and keep phone and TV on the same band of the router.

Does the hotspot trick work on a Sony TV that was factory reset?

No. A reset erases every saved network, so there is nothing for the TV to rejoin and no name you could copy. The hotspot only helps when the Bravia still remembers a network and that network has gone away — a new router, a changed password, a house move. After a reset, use Ethernet or a USB mouse to get through first-time setup.

Where is the Wi-Fi setting on a Sony Google TV or Android TV?

On a Bravia with Google TV — the BRAVIA 3, 5, 7, 8 and 9 and most sets from 2021 on — open Settings from the gear icon and choose Network & Internet; Wi-Fi is the first switch.
