LG TV volume not working? It is probably SIMPLINK.

LG volume that stopped responding is usually a routing problem — the TV is sending audio to a soundbar or Bluetooth device, not a broken speaker. A phone app changes volume over the network, bypassing the remote entirely. Worth knowing: the letter in an LG model number is the model year — UR 2023, UT 2024, UA 2025, UB 2026 — and it tells you which webOS generation you have.

LG's HDMI-CEC, an optical cable with no control channel, or Auto Volume — the volume chain breaks in predictable places, and a phone on the same Wi-Fi routes around all of them. Volume is free in the app.

webOS, and the year is in the model number

Which LG TV you have — and how it takes commands

Every current LG runs webOS — webOS 26 on the 2026 range. What changes between sets is the version, and LG encodes the model year as a letter in the model number: UR is 2023, T and UT are 2024, A and UA are 2025, B and UB are 2026. That letter tells you how modern the software on your panel is.

LG TV model lines, the operating system each one runs, how it is reached over the network, whether pairing is required, and where the on-set button is.
Model line / series TV operating system How it is controlled over the network Pairing On-set button
Entry LED (UT / UR / UA / UB classes) webOS WebSocket over HTTPS on port 3001 PIN shown on screen Joystick nub, bottom-centre under the logo
QNED (Mini-LED backlight) webOS WebSocket over HTTPS on port 3001 PIN shown on screen Joystick nub, bottom-centre under the logo
OLED evo B / C / G series webOS WebSocket over HTTPS on port 3001 PIN shown on screen Joystick nub, bottom-centre under the logo
Pre-webOS-4.0 sets webOS 2.0 / 3.0 / 3.5 WebSocket over HTTPS on port 3001 PIN shown on screen Joystick nub or lower rear edge

Older sets are not just slower — TVs below webOS 4.0 have documented app-compatibility gaps, so a set from the webOS 2.0 or 3.0 era behaves differently from a current one even on identical hardware.

Reaching the menu with no remote

A nub you find by feel

LG puts a single joystick nub under the centre of the panel, directly below the logo, and on many sets it is recessed far enough that you locate it by touch rather than sight. A press powers the set; tilting moves through volume, channel, input and the power menu. Some models place it on the lower rear edge instead.

The nub reaches basic navigation but not the full network menu on every model. ThinQ is LG’s intended path once the TV is on a network; Ethernet gets you through first-time setup when it is not.

Known LG failure mode

The pairing PIN never appears, or the app asks for a password you do not have

LG’s pairing flow asks for either a PIN shown on the TV or the set’s Wi-Fi Direct password, which lives on the TV’s own device screen — a flow that has stayed broadly the same from webOS 2.0 through webOS 26. The usual reason nothing appears is a band mismatch: the TV on 2.4 GHz and the phone on 5 GHz of the same-named network, or mobile data quietly taking over.

What helps: Put the phone on the 2.4 GHz band of the same network and switch mobile data off while pairing. If the app wants the Wi-Fi Direct password, read it from the TV’s own device or home dashboard screen.

LG TV Volume Control That Bypasses the Remote

Volume and mute travel over your Wi-Fi network, not infrared — so they work even when the remote's buttons are dead. Volume is free forever.

Auto-Discovery. Zero Config.

LG volume failures cluster around SIMPLINK (LG's HDMI-CEC): a misbehaving CEC chain mutes or freezes volume while everything else works, an optical cable physically carries no volume back-channel, and Auto Volume / AI Sound quietly change loudness by design. The app moves volume over the webOS WebSocket (port 3001, one-time 8-digit PIN) — a network path independent of the remote and of SIMPLINK — so it is both the fix and the diagnostic. Volume and mute are free forever.

How it works

Get LG TV Volume Back — From Your Phone

  1. Step 1

    Check SIMPLINK first

SIMPLINK is LG's name for HDMI-CEC, and when it misbehaves it causes exactly this: volume that ignores the remote, sound cutouts, phantom input switching. Settings → General → SIMPLINK — toggle it off, test, and update the soundbar's firmware before switching it back on.

  2. Step 2

Control volume from your phone over Wi-Fi

Our app drives an LG webOS set over WebSocket on port 3001 — after a one-time 8-digit PIN, volume and mute travel over the network, independent of the remote and of SIMPLINK. If phone volume works, the TV is healthy and the remote chain is the fault. Volume is free, forever.

  3. Step 3

Optical cable? That is the answer

An optical (TOSLINK) connection carries audio but has no volume back-channel — the TV remote physically cannot adjust a soundbar wired by optical alone. Either move the soundbar to the HDMI ARC port with SIMPLINK on, or control the soundbar's own volume directly.

  4. Step 4

Set Digital Sound Out to PCM

When volume responds erratically with an external device, Settings → Sound → Digital Sound Out → PCM is the most stable format and clears format-negotiation failures. Also check Auto Volume and AI Sound — both deliberately change loudness on their own and read as "broken volume" when forgotten.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Specific answers for LG TV users — including which LG lines run which system.

Why is my LG TV volume not responding to the remote?

The usual suspects, in order: SIMPLINK (LG's HDMI-CEC) misbehaving with a soundbar; the soundbar wired by optical, which carries audio but no volume-control channel; Auto Volume or AI Sound adjusting loudness on their own; or a dead remote. Phone volume over Wi-Fi bypasses every one of these, which also isolates the fault in seconds.

Volume works from the app but not from the LG remote — what is broken?

Nothing on the TV. The app reaches the set over the network (WebSocket, port 3001), while the remote's volume goes through IR and, with a soundbar, through SIMPLINK. A working network path with a dead remote path points at the remote or the CEC chain — re-pair the Magic Remote, toggle SIMPLINK, or update the soundbar firmware.

My LG remote cannot change the soundbar volume over optical. Why?

Because optical physically cannot: TOSLINK carries the audio signal one way and has no control back-channel. Volume over optical must be changed on the soundbar itself. To control soundbar volume from the TV remote, connect the soundbar via the HDMI ARC port with SIMPLINK enabled instead.

What is the most stable audio format setting on an LG TV?

PCM. When an external audio device makes volume behave erratically, setting Settings → Sound → Digital Sound Out to PCM removes the format negotiation that often causes it. It is the standard first move before deeper troubleshooting.

Is volume control free in the app?

Yes. Volume, mute, channels, D-pad and OK are free forever on LG TVs — the one-time 8-digit PIN pairing is the whole setup. Premium adds power, keyboard, touchpad and app shortcuts; a volume problem needs none of them.

Does LG have its own remote app for this TV?

LG ThinQ. LG retired the standalone LG TV Plus app in late 2023 and moved its remote features into ThinQ. ThinQ reaches the TV over local Wi-Fi using LG’s own protocol, so no infrared hardware is involved on either end.

Where is the button on the LG TV itself, and can it reach the settings menu?

LG puts a single joystick nub under the centre of the panel, directly below the logo, and on many sets it is recessed far enough that you locate it by touch rather than sight. A press powers the set; tilting moves through volume, channel, input and the power menu. Some models place it on the lower rear edge instead. The nub reaches basic navigation but not the full network menu on every model. ThinQ is LG’s intended path once the TV is on a network; Ethernet gets you through first-time setup when it is not.

Why would a remote app fail to find my LG TV?

LG’s pairing flow asks for either a PIN shown on the TV or the set’s Wi-Fi Direct password, which lives on the TV’s own device screen — a flow that has stayed broadly the same from webOS 2.0 through webOS 26. The usual reason nothing appears is a band mismatch: the TV on 2.4 GHz and the phone on 5 GHz of the same-named network, or mobile data quietly taking over. Put the phone on the 2.4 GHz band of the same network and switch mobile data off while pairing. If the app wants the Wi-Fi Direct password, read it from the TV’s own device or home dashboard screen.
