LG Magic Remote Buttons Not Working? Fix AN-MR Issues on webOS

LG's AN-MR Magic Remotes (including the AN-MR22GA and AN-MR23GA) pair with the TV via Bluetooth for pointer and navigation functions, while some buttons fall back to IR for basic commands. If your webOS TV stops responding to specific buttons, the most common causes are a Bluetooth pairing dropout, a dead battery in the click-wheel module, or a webOS firmware regression. The re-pairing process takes 10 seconds — and if the hardware is faulty, your iPhone can replace it permanently.

How it works

Fix Your LG Remote in 4 Steps

Step 1

Check batteries or charge level

Replace LG remote batteries. Solar-powered remotes need ambient light — hold near a lamp for 30 seconds.

Step 2

Re-pair via Bluetooth

Point at the TV's IR receiver and hold Return + Play/Pause simultaneously for 5 seconds to force a Bluetooth re-pair.

Step 3

Factory reset the remote

Hold Power + Volume Down + Channel Down for 12 seconds. The LED blinks three times on success.

Step 4

Use the app as instant backup

Download the Universal TV Remote app for full LG TV control over Wi-Fi while you troubleshoot the physical remote.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Specific answers for LG TV users.

How do I re-pair my LG Magic Remote when navigation buttons stop working?

While pointing the remote at the TV, hold the Home button and the Back button simultaneously for 5 seconds until the LED at the top blinks three times. The Magic Remote will re-register its Bluetooth connection with webOS. If this fails, scroll to Settings → All Settings → General → Devices → External Devices → Bluetooth Remotes and Devices → Bluetooth Remote: Magic Remote, delete the existing pairing, then hold the Wheel button on the remote for 5 seconds to start a fresh pair.

The Magic Remote pointer works but OK/confirm button doesn't — why?

The pointer function uses Bluetooth motion data while the confirm (OK/center) button on some AN-MR models transmits a separate Bluetooth HID keycode. If the pointer moves but OK fails, try registering the remote again via the Settings menu path above. Alternatively, a webOS firmware update may have introduced a Bluetooth HID regression — check Settings → All Settings → Support → Software Update and install any pending updates to resolve known Bluetooth issues.

Is there a way to use my iPhone as an LG Magic Remote replacement?

Yes, and it's completely free. Our app connects over Wi-Fi using the same LG ThinQ LAN protocol that LG's own mobile app uses. You get full pointer simulation via your iPhone's gyroscope, all navigation buttons, Quick Settings access, input switching, and media playback controls. Multiple users report using the app permanently after their AN-MR remote hardware failed — avoiding the $30–$50 cost of an OEM replacement.
