Samsung TV remote not working?

Samsung Smart Remotes (One Remote) control the TV over Bluetooth, not IR, and the Bluetooth pairing can drop after TV firmware updates, HDMI-CEC conflicts, or a power cut. Hold RETURN and PLAY/PAUSE for 3+ seconds from close range to force re-pairing. If the TV shows no pairing message at all, power-cycle it first — the Bluetooth stack only fully resets on cold boot.

Flip it over: solar remotes since 2021 have a USB-C port on the bottom edge. Ten minutes of USB-C charging gives you hours of use; indoor light alone often can't keep up in dim rooms. While it charges, an iPhone remote app over Wi-Fi covers you — our app connects to the TV with one on-screen Allow tap and needs no cables or account.

You don't need SmartThings. Our free app talks directly to the TV on your local network — Samsung's own pairing prompt appears on the TV, you press Allow with the joystick button on the TV (center-bottom, behind the logo), and from then on the iPhone handles navigation, volume, inputs, and apps. SmartThings requires a Samsung account and cloud login; this doesn't.

Samsung smart TVs running Tizen — effectively all Samsung smart models from 2016 onward — as long as the TV is on the same Wi-Fi as your iPhone. Older Samsung sets without network connectivity (IR-only) can't be controlled by any phone app, because they have no Wi-Fi radio to receive commands.

Basic Samsung controls — navigation, volume, mute, channels — are free forever. No credit card and no trial countdown. Advanced extras like custom layouts and casting are optional premium features, and you can use the free controls indefinitely without ever seeing a payment screen mid-session.

SmartThings. Samsung’s own route is SmartThings, which absorbed Smart View in 2020. It wants the TV and the phone signed in to the same Samsung account, and on iPhone it needs Local Network permission granted or it cannot see the TV at all.

Recent Samsungs carry a multi-directional jog stick on the rear panel, bottom-right as you face the screen — centre on The Frame. Tilt up and down for volume or menu movement, left and right for channel and input, press to select, and hold the centre to power off. Sets from 2016 to 2019 instead put a single button on the front lower bezel under the logo. The jog controller opens the on-screen Control Menu, which is enough to reach network settings without a remote — the one on-panel control on this list that genuinely gets you into the menu.

Samsung documents four separate causes, and they are easy to mistake for one another: phone and TV not genuinely on the same network — a mesh that splits 2.4 and 5 GHz can look identical and behave differently; the TV and app not signed in to the same Samsung account; Local Network permission not granted to the app on iPhone; and, on 2016 and later sets, an Allow prompt on the TV screen that has to be accepted. Work through them in that order. The Allow prompt is the awkward one when the remote is dead — use the jog controller on the rear panel to accept it.
